Tate Modern Presents: Paul Gauguin

Where does one start about Paul Gauguin; one of the world's most famous and best-loved artists from the early 20^th century. For the first time in the UK in over 50 years, Tate Modern presents an exhibition dedicated to this master French Post-Impressionist, featuring paintings and drawings from around the world. His sumptuous, colourful images of women in Tahiti and beautiful landscape images of Brittany in France are some of the most popular images in Modern art.

Gauguin was the ultimate global traveller, sailing the South Seas, and living in Peru, Martinique, and Paris among other places. This exhibition explores the role of the myths around the man – Gauguin as storyteller, painting himself as a Christ-like figure or even a demon in his own paintings, religious and mythical symbols in his work, and the manipulation of his own artistic identity. It features many of his iconic paintings, including those showing daily village life from the artist's colony of Pont-Aven in Brittany, nude bathers and haystacks in the Breton landscape, and decorative works such as the carved wooden door panels around Gauguin's hut in the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia.
Gauguin sought to escape European civilisation in the South Seas. Inspired by Tahiti's tropical flora, fauna and island life, he immersed himself in its fast-disappearing local culture to invest his art with deeper meaning, ritual and myth.

Newspeak Exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery

Saatchi's notorious 1997 Sensation exhibition, made him king of London's art scene and signaled a whole new era for contemporary British  art. Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst and Marc Quinn are only a few of the  British artists to mention, who now rule the international art world. Thirteen years onwards, Newspeak is Saatchi's biggest exhibition since, and is meant to prove that Brit art is far from over. However, this is a much less outrageous affair than its predecessor and aims to start a new era yet again. As Newspeak features so much art, it has had to be split into two parts. The first part opened end of May and the second one will open in October. If you love your art, this exhibition shouldn't be missed. Once you have visited the exhibition, I recommend that you have lunch, coffee or a drink at the gallery's Mess Café/Bar. Great surroundings and some of the coolest people in town.

Maison Martin Margiela '20’ The Exhibition

Somerset House is proud to host Maison Martin Margiela ‘20’ The Exhibition, a major exhibition celebrating 20 years of one of contemporary fashion’s most influential and enigmatic designers. This ambitious, multi-layered exhibition captures Margiela’s unique aesthetic and vision, incorporating garments, installations, photography and film. This exhibition was initiated by the Fashion Museum Province of Antwerp and Maison Martin Margiela.

Young as its history is, no other fashion house has had quite the same impact on our understanding of fashion and its relationship to history, craft, commerce and innovation. 20 years on, Maison Martin Margiela’s radical questioning and rethinking of what fashion is, how we clothe the body and ideals of human beauty, are still as groundbreaking as ever.
